Annual Macroinvertebrate Survey |
|
Marvelous Macroinvertebrates (Bugs!) in the Lehigh River. Identifying bugs that fish eat...
This event is one of the most important on the calendar. We collect insects in the river, separate, catagorize and count their numbers. This helps assure that the river water quality is not getting impacted by any development upstream.
Bring wading shoes and a towel. Wonderful program for kids and families!

The Wonders of Waterfowl with Molly Giles |
Molly Giles, Biologist, Pennsylvania Game Commission will cover interesting facts about ducks, geese, and swans. We'll learn about the food resources they use, how they nest and raise their young, special adaptations that help them live in aquatic environments, and the awesome annual migration that these birds undertake every fall and spring. We will discuss how the Pennsylvania Game Commission manages waterfowl populations using survey and by marking birds with leg bands and GPS transmitters. We'll also talk about the importance of wetlands and the benefits they provide to wildlife and humans.

Marvelous Moths! Frank Distefano, known as the “Moth Man” led us on an evening devoted to moths in the Pinchot State Forest Manny Gordon Recreation Area on Bear Lake Road. After his presentation, we spent time viewing these beauties of nature and discuss the best way to attract moths. A retired research chemist and materials engineer, Frank Distefano began photographing moths twelve years ago, after similar enchantments with butterflies, dragonflies, and native orchids. He found moths to offer several advantages to the photographer. Most moths are readily attracted with light or bait. They are easy to photograph close-up, as they land still and flat-winged (butterflies move around more and tend to fold their wings closed). Frank has travelled to numerous locations in the U.S. and has been to Costa Rica fifteen times in pursuit of his passion. Kids and family friendly.
